ContextFriends of the Theatre by the Lake was formed in July 1998 as a volunatry fund-raising body for the promotion of the newly erected Theatre by the Lake in Keswick. Its origins go back to 1985, with the formation of Theatre For Cumbria, itself the successor to Friends of the Century Theatre which had disbanded in December 1984.

In 1990, Theatre for Cumbria changed its name to Thetare in Keswick and adopted a new constitution. Its aim was to offer financial help to productions staged at the Century Theatre (popularly referred to as the Blue Box Theatre) as well as to any future new-build theatre project in Keswick. When this was finally achieved with the building of the Theatre by the Lake in 1998, it was decided to rename Theatre in Keswick as The Friends of the Theatre by the Lake
