ContextEllwood & Son, Rope and Twine Makers was established in 1816 on Sandes Close, which was at the back of the original Stramongate School playing fields. The business then moved up to Skewbarrow near the Kendal Golf course and finally to its present site in Stockbeck, Kendal in 1910.
The current Mr Ellwood joined the business in 1955 and was later in partnership with his father.
The works continued until 2003 when he retired and without a family member willing to take on the business, it was sold, despite the full order book.
