ContextThe West Cumberland Geology Group was an informal group of interested people headed by Charles Edmonds (1885-1964) and Edgar H Shackleton ( 903-1991) with R E O Pearson as Secretary in 1957. Talks and excursions were arranged with meetings generally held in Whitheaven College. In 1962 this became formalised as the Cumberland Geological Society. The 1st President was Charles Edmonds who served until his death on 2 Jan 1964. A memorial prize was instituted in his memory. Edgar Shackleton became the 2nd President and served until 1981. After his death the constituion of the Society was amended and Presidents only served for two or three years. Angela Marchant was the first female President and th first to die in office in May 2006, a Bursary was created in her name.

The Society's Library was created in 1965 from a gift of books from Tom Eastwood (formerly Geological Survey Geologists for West Cumbria), this was added to over the years. Morley Burton was the first Society Librarian
