ContextWhitehaven Youth for Christ was formed in Batty's Cafe, Whitehaven, in March 1957, with the object of presenting Christianity to local teenagers under its 'Operation Outreach'. In 1963 its affiliated 'Pioneer 2' Committee started missionary work using a coach, visiting towns and villages in the area. During the 1960s the organisation made use of a number of local and American Christian folk and pop ensembles to perform for young people.
