ContextFred Swarbrick became Walney Lighthouse assistant keeper in 1920 moving from Piel Island with his wife and two daughters, Ella (born 1915) and Peggy (Margaret Grace born 1919). In 1933 he became Lighthouse Keeper, a job he kept until he died in 1952. Both girls married on the same day in 1952. Ella married Albert Wheeler at the Register Office and Peggy married Ken Braithwaite an engineer and wartime wing commander at St Mary's, Walney. Between 1952 and Ella's death in 1967, Albert and Ella were in charge of the lighthouse. Peggy became assistant keeper when Ella died and on Albert's retirement in 1975 she took over charge of the lighthouse. In 1984 Peggy was awarded the British Empire Medal which was presented to her at the Lakeland Rose Show by Princess Margaret on 14 July 1984. She retired in 1994 and died two years later in 1996.
