ContextWalter Lindsay Smith was born in Gomersal, Yorkshire in 1877. In 1911 he as a jobbing gardener at Abbott Hall, Kents Bank living with his mother, Harrriet and 2 brothers. In 1915 he was called up, despite a plea from the Rev W B Fitzgerald to allow him to stay and look after his widowed mother and an invalid brother who was helpless and mentally deficient. He joined the 13th (Transport Workers) Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment and worked at London Docks. Regimental number: 58892. Walter died on 30 April 1966 at North Lonsdale Hospital in Barrow. He was living at Darwinian Lodge, Kirkhead, Kents Bank. He may have married Edith Charleswoth in 1925.
